DESCRIPTION
Vintage bamboo pipe made and used by the native Samo people of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. Also refereed to as a Sougou Bunlin theses traditional pipes are simple in construction with traditional decorative banding throughout.
This was part of a collection from the estate of Dr Dan Shaw, CA.
Dan Shaw, an American missionary-linguist-anthropologist affiliated with both the APCM and the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Dr Dan Shaw and his family lived with the Samo from 1970 until 1982, learned their language and did translation work. Dan was initiated as a Samo in 1973 and even though he and his family returned to California in 1982, he is still considered as a Samo brother.
A great rare piece of functional documentation of Papua New Guinea history.
