---------------
Short company history:
Since about 1600 there were potters in the Westerwald, Germany. A descendant, Wilhelm Merkelbach (1817-1859), founded the Merkelbach Manufaktur in Höhr-Grenzhausen in 1843. After his early death in 1859, his then only 12-year-old son Wilhelm Reinhold Merkelbach began to help his mother run the company. Only utility and household items were produced, such as measuring vessels and storage containers.
From 1907, Paul Merkelbach (1882-1917) and Reinhold Merkelbach (1885-1918) continued to run the family business. The collaboration with famous Art Nouveau designers made the name Reinhold Merkelbach known for outstanding quality and modern design.
In 1911, Reinhold Merkelbach, Simon Peter Gerz, Reinhold Hanke and Walter Müller changed their name to Steinzeugwerke Höhr-Grenzhausen GmbH. In 1918, Reinhold Merkelbach was the only remaining shareholder of this company, which had all its forms.
In 1936, Steinzeugwerke Höhr-Grenzhausen GmbH was incorporated into Reinhold Merkelbach.
In the 1980s, the company briefly belonged to W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik & Co. Due to increasingly difficult market conditions, the traditional company finally had to close its doors in 2007.
