History: About 1771 Henry William Stiegel, an immigrant from Germany founded the American Flint Glass Manufactory in Pennsylvania. America was still not seen as serious in the glass making business as other countries such as Italy and France. It wasn't until 1876 American cut glass craftsmen excelled all others worldwide. This was the start of the American brilliant period. About 1897 began the acid wash method of making American brilliant cut glass forming some of the best made and designed glass lasting until 1917. Some pieces of American brilliant cut glass were made until 1920 around the time the first glass making machine press was made making glass making much faster but not keeping the quality of glass made from 1876-1917.
