While I normally use my own photos as reference material, I was asked to paint this bird from a friend's photo, taken in Costa Rica. Thank you so much, Karyn Look, for the use of your wonderful photo!
The Ornate hawk-eagle is a bird-of-prey which lives in the tropical Americas. This bird is a true eagle and has a wingspan of three to four feet. The ornate hawk-eagle is known for its striking markings, as seen here in this painting.
Here, the bird has its crest raised (dark feathers on top of its head). The ornate hawk-eagle raises its crest, at will, when it gets excited or curious about something. This bird is also in the "mantling" position, which is typical of a bird-of-prey guarding a fresh-kill (though no evidence of food was in the photo which I used as a reference to paint this bird).
