Beautiful vintage pair of large Chinese silk brocade cushion covers, mirror image, unused in selling original box, Shanghai, China circa 1960s 70s.

A stunning pair of mid-century Chinese silk pictorial brocade cushion covers, as new and unused in their selling cardboard original box, made by the Shanghai First Silk Printing & Dyeing Mill circa the 1960s or 1970s.

These beautiful cushion covers are large throw cushion size, with a circular scene of trees, mountains and traditional buildings and an image of the Buddha in female form, surrounded by an intricately patterned border. The cushions are mirror-imaged. Their palette is dominantly a beautiful soft pastel turquoise or aqua, picked out with pinks, greens, oranges and blues, with a circle of various symbols finished with a black/brown geometric border.

The cushion backs are an unspecified fabric in turquoise, and the cushion covers are finished with satin cord or rope knotted at the corners, also in turquoise.

The cushion covers remain as new and unused and in their original packaging, safely stored away over the decades. The box is squashed and the cushion covers have fold marks consistent with long-term storage. These cushion covers are in excellent vintage condition, clean, bright and softly shining. Although well-made and robust in their way I would suggest that they are considered as either collector's pieces or used as purely decorative rather than functional cushion covers in order to preserve and maintain the crispness and delicate nature of the silk brocade fabric.
