Russian Gzhel Porcelain Mugs Blue Rose Motif Cobalt Blue Set of 2
These pedestal mugs are the original Gzhel classics of a delicate ovoid form with curved feet, gadrooning to the upper body, petal rim and an elegant scroll handle. They are perfectly balanced, comfortable to hold and pleasantly tactile. Painted by hand, without any preliminary drawing, the mugs are unique one-off pieces representative of the oldest Russian folk handicraft spanning almost seven hundred years.
An iconic 'Gzhel blue rose' motif features a flower, leaves, wavy sprigs and curly tendrils flowing on snow-white surfaces of the porcelain. Gzhel underglaze painting is renowned for its intricacy of brushwork, subtle nuances of underglaze cobalt blue and association with miniatures of the Old Believers' liturgical manuscripts.
The mugs were created by Morozov Igor Nikolaevich Морозов Игорь Николаевич, a well-known Russian sculptor-modeller, artist and ceramicist. They were made from the finest hard-paste porcelain and hand-painted at his private artistic studio 'MOROZOV Gzhel HANDMADE PORCELAIN' in the village of Novo-Kharitonovo, Moscow Oblast, Russian Federation, around the turn of the current century.
The base bears a studio mark in underglaze grey-green comprised of words 'МОРОЗОВ Гжель' in Cyrillic and 'HAND MADE IN RUSSIA'. A word 'Гжель' is handwritten in underglaze cobalt blue.
Fine craftsmanship and artistic originality of the mugs make them highly collectable and sought-after.
