Puffy Dragon Pendant Necklace Sterling Silver Green Stone

ITEM: A tremendously cool Dragon Pendant in sterling silver, set with a green stone cabochon with a sterling rope chain necklace. This dragon is just really well made and with great attention to detail. It's Holloware with repousse details adding that puffed out effect. The dragons scales are very textural and the face is as fierce as they come. Whiskers that look as it they're just about to reach out and smell you and beady little eyes, close set behind the nose that looks as though it might easily be about to grab you in its maw! I mean; the detailing in this piece is absolutely stunning. Surrounding the beast are what look to be symbols for either clouds or possibly water. The fantastical creature has no legs so it seems fitting it would be a creature of sky or water. Interestingly, Chinese Dragons were not represented as fire breakers but were thought to breathe out clouds and steam! Long associated with Good Fortune, Masculine Energy and Long Life, Chinese Dragons weren't seen as malevolent beings as they were depicted in Western cultures. Powerful, yes. Malevolent? No. The bezel set cab is a green colored stone. Although it is a Jade green, I don't think it is Jade, or nephrite. I actually think it may be glass or green quartz. It's a gorgeous colored stone however and is certainly befitting of this style of dragon. I just can't say what type of stone it may be. Regardless of what kind of stone it is, this repousse silver dragon is a piece of highly skilled and detail oriented craftsmanship that has a fantastic look about it. The sterling rope chain has been added by me because the pendant came to me without one. You may choose to change it out but I just wanted to give you something in the meanwhile, so you can wear your new friend right away! A crazy cool pendant and actually, I like the rope style chain for a dragon; serpent like, it fits it well I think! All said, I think this is one of the finer pieces of its type that I've had in shop for quite awhile now. Very dimensional, whiskered and scaled, Leung Dragon in the Chinese style.

SIZE & WEIGHT: The pendant measures 2” tall, including the bail and is 1 1/4” wide. It's a tad over 1/4” deep. The sterling rope chain is 16” end to end with a spring ring clasp. Together, chain and pendant weigh 12.5 grams by my scale.

CONDITION: In very good condition showing aged appropriate wear overall. I see no dings, dents, breaks or cracks on that puffy dragon. No chips or cracks on the bezel set cab. The chain, while not original, is from the same era and features typical construction details as you might expect from that era. No kinks noted. There's natural wear on both in terms of patina. Patina refers to the natural process of oxidation over time and is not the same thing as tarnish, rust or verdigris. In the case of the dragon pendant, it shows as depth to detail by darkening the recesses. It also creates a wonderful luster that only time can provide. I do think the pendant may once have had a gold wash as there are still areas where it appears ever so slightly golden as compared to the chain. It could also be from whatever other metals were in the mix because although the dragon pendant has no stamps or signature plate, it did test as sterling or better. I think maybe it's 950 silver but haven't had that officially (professionally) tested yet. The chain is stamped sterling and also has an initial B. I am not familiar with the mark so don't know who to attribute it to. It tests at sterling as well. The spring ring is also stamped sterling or 925. The selling clasp is intact and functional. That green stone is well seated and without play. The more I look at it, the more I think it's likely glass. But I'm not a gemologist so it might be quartz or Jasper I suppose. Definitely not Jade even if Jade green in color. Just being up front about that! Altogether, this is a really well crafted pendant on a good quality chain. Stylish and full of pizzazz, this Dragon is fantastic in every sense! A great gift idea.
