In the 1500's a ship carrying Spanish explorers wrecked off the coast of North Carolina when they encountered a bad storm and began to sink. Among those on board were also Spanish Mustangs. During all of the chaos of the wreck, the surviving horses escaped and swam ashore. They arrived on a barrier island, which is now known as the Outer Banks. The horses that inhabit the island today are still 100% pure descendants of those that swam ashore hundreds of years ago. The horses photographed in this series still live wild and free, roaming the beach and the dunes same as their ancestors did in the colonial era.
