Nr. selling 26 Rörstrand one left Rorstrand Sweden largest oven dish rectangular Picknick Marianne Westman Scandinavian mid century modern Swedish
20 APRIL UPDATE: ONE SOLD ONLY ONE LEFT.
In this listing we are pleased to offer two times the largest size rectangular oven dish with raised edges from the Picknick line of the Swedish ceramics manufacturer Rörstrand. Perfect for a large family dish!
And...both in virtual mint condition/never used.
The design is by Marianne Westman and dates from 1956. The picknick line shows a variety of Scandinavian food stuffs laid out as if for a picnic. Hand-painted.
When it came out in 1956, the original Picknick catalogue comprised 37 different items, many of them with variations in color and size. They were numbered P1 to P37 in the catalogue, but selling not on the items themselves! The numbering on the items themselves has a peculiar logic and some numbers are even as high as 134. Some items do not even carry a number.
These first 37 items also included some designs of the Pomona line that was also designed by Marianne Westman in 1952.
Picknick was produced from 1956 tot 1969. After that year no new items have been produced. So all items that can be found today date from 1969 or before.
These dishes were the number 3 item (P3) in the original 1956 Picknick catalogue and came in three sizes/numbers (24, 25 & 26). These are the biggest size number 26.
Signed on the backside with Picknick Rörstrand Sweden HandPainted Ovenware and the number 26.
Pea pod with green coloring.
Measurements:
Height: 5 cm / 1.97 inches
Width: 36.5 cm / 14.37 inches
Depth: 28.5 cm / 11.22 inches
Weight: 1846 & 1923 grams respectively.
Condition:
Excellent to mint condition.
Both are incredible museum worthy pieces.
Considering we bought them from two different sources that is even more surprising.
To our expertise both were never used in cooking, which is quite rare for the Rorstrand oven dishes.
Both dishes have a few faint scratches/lines on the inside bottoms but we believe these are not from forks or knifes but from other ceramics being piled inside this dish. For one dish these lines are bit longer and for the other a few short scratches run a little deeper and are tangible.
One dish has one brown dot and a brown circle connected to it both of 4 millimeters on the outside rim. These are age related and not from use or damage. There is no roughness or any other imperfection at this point. This is just something that has grown under the glazing.
Otherwise perfect. Wonderfully white. Strong glazing. Great colors.
As with all Picknick items: the dish has the three standard markings on the bottom - and for one dish these markings have turned brown a little bit - where the item was held during decorating/baking. These markings are from production not use.
