This wool painting depicts the bright colors of a sunset overlooking an Irish beach. This piece was created by needle felting Irish wool, and finished with free motion embroidery and natural materials.
The process of felting is one of the oldest forms of textile art which involves the matting of colored selling woolen fibers together. In the case of needle felting, the technique involves pushing the fibers back and forth using a sharp needle with sharp barbs along the shaft. The sharp barbs on the needle catch the fibers and eventually lock them in place. It is a long and meditative process.
Layering of colored wool matted together with the needle felting tool was the first step, followed by stitching for added depth and detail.
