Vintage Massachusetts State Police Campaign Hat Badge - selling Silver Tone

Nice vintage Massachusetts State Police Campaign hat badge. The shield shaped badge features a highly detailed State Seal of Massachusetts with pierced ribboning, an Algonquin Native American holding a bow and arrow with a five point star next to his head. The badge is topped with a bent arm holding a broadsword aloft. Along outer edge of the shield a scroll reads: "ENSE PETIT PLACIDAM SUB LIBERTATE QUIETEM" in embossed lettering and it loosely translates to "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty"

"By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty".
It is the motto of both Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It was written around 1660 by Algernon Sidney, a member of the British "long parliament".
