Fantastic late 1800s tintype photo shows two young couples in a tintype gallery in Oriental Grove. Tintype is about 3-1/2 x 2-1/2” and is enclosed in a shabby paper frame. Tintype has wear, small scratches, and light bending.

According to a memoir about Old Great Neck, Oriental selling Grove was an amusement park on Long Island, NY in the 2nd half of the 1800s. It was located on the old George Hewlett estate and accessed by taking the Long Island Railroad to Great Neck, or by steamship. It extended from Pond Road to the shore of Locust Cove. There was a main building, a bar, a large dancing platform, a bank of 8 bucket swings seating 6 people each, a shooting gallery, a large carousel, a soft drinks stand, peanuts, ice cream and soda fountain, and a gallery where you could have your tintype picture taken. There was a nice sandy stretch of beach and a line of bathing houses. Near the landing was a clam and oyster bar. There was also a float where row boats could be rented for a row on the bay.

Recreational grounds like Oriental Grove in Great Neck became popular steamship destinations for weekend travelers looking to escape the city for a day of relaxation, nature, sport, and picnicking.
