Kirkus review:
Everyone agreed that Sam was too young to fish -- but brother Tom weakens and allows Sam the loan of his popper plug. When Sam tries to catch the big fish he had previously seen, he only succeeds in losing the popper and angering Tom. Only Uncle Jack believes the fish story anyway. Wishing to give his nephew a second chance, he sets out with him for the stream equipped with rod, reel and trout fly. But it is Sam who catches the trout with the help of Uncle Jack's muscle power. The reward of course is a new rod and reel as well as the admiration of Tom and the family. Leonard Shortall's representative drawings in two colors not only tell a charming and credible tale, they instruct young fishermen in simple aspects of trout catching.
