Blue Whale selling wood carving by Jim Stangland (the decoy carver)!

This is the Blue Whale- the largest of the whale tribe! 80 feet long and 330,000 pounds- that's 65 tons! Difficult to imagine something that big! Despite the size, it feeds only on tiny krill and microscopic plankton, filtering them out of the water with the baleen in it's mouth. It can eat 8,000 lbs of krill and plankton in a day!

The great Blue whales were largely ignored by the early whalers-- just too big to be successfully taken by their little oared boats. However, the advent of the modern factory ship and diesel powered “catch” boats with their explosive harpoon heads, allowed modern whalers to add the Blue to their list!

This is a big carving! Over 11” in length- suitable to its actual size! Carved grooves on the chin,too! Take a look at all the pictures- they show what a great rendition the carver has done of this ocean-dwelling mammal! One of the few times Jim has gone outside his usual spearing decoy offerings and went with a purely decorative wood carving! No line tie, no weight, a whale's not even a fish! Somehow a whale spearing decoy just didn't seem logical! These are truly fine figures of the whale, done and signed by the maker. Scant few were made!



Jim Stangland is a long time carver of contemporary fish decoys, modeled after the 100 year old ice fishing spearing decoys of NY, and the upper midwest. They are NOT working decoys. These are selling very popular fishing collectibles! His work has had followers for many years! These are handmade, shaped and painted, weighted, and the carving & painting is extremely detailed and realistic! Hand cut metal painted fins. Eyes are either glass or taxidermy quality acrylic.
