Vintage Blue Boy Bisque Porcelain Lamp with Fabulous Retro Lamp Shade in Blush Pink Ruffles with Light Gray Netting and Gold-tone Cord. Blue Boy is dressed in a matching soft blue suit coat and knickers, white tights, fancy shoes with large buckles, and a cape under one arm. In the other hand he holds a fancy hat with full feathers. He stands on a creamy round base adorned with green leaves and small pink flowers.
The Blue Boy is modeled after a well known painting by Thomas Gainsborough completed circa 1770 in the Rococo style. A man named Jonathan Buttle is thought to be the original model though this has never been proven. Blue Boy is often paired with Pinkie, a beautiful young woman dressed in pink.
Famous in print productions, the original full length painting can be seen at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.
I gently pulled the green felt away from the bottom to tighten the Blue Boy figurine which had become loose over time. The name, "Maud Thomas" is etched in the porcelain. Perhaps Maud was a ceramicist or member of a hobby club where she made this lamp from a mold. Maud Thomas is noted as selling an artist online. The felt could be gently re-glued. Some of the original glue has darkened.
Wonderful condition. There are no cracks, no breaks, no scratches, no rips. Both lamp base and shade are in very good condition.
Lamp works.
This romantic lamp came from an estate sale in Salt Lake City, Utah where the original owners had lived since 1954. Everything in the house was kept in pristine shape. I surmise that this lamp dates from the 1950's or before. The inside of the lamp shade is in good condition, no rips, but there is some moisture stain on the inside of the very top.
Measures 22" tall, almost 2 feet high.
