Naxos Marble, One Of The Lightest Marbles Used For Sculpture Since Paleolithic Times!

Cycladic figurines are worldwide famous for their strict geometric structure, harmonious proportions and abstract quality virtues. Cycladic Art was source of inspiration for important twentieth-century artists such as Brancusi, Modiliani, Giacometti, Moore and Hepworth and established as one of the most distinctive forms of western artistic expression. It is always small and, usually, they represent mostly female figures.

The Cycladic figurines of this form represent female figures standing naked, with the arms folded below their chest. Their abstract refined figure probably represents a great "Mother Goddess", symbol of fertility and rejuvenation.

This figurine belongs to the Canonical Type of the Spedos Variety. It's line based on a museum copy of a broken Cycladic Figurine. Hundreds of heads from broken Cycladic figurines are around the world listed into the most famous museums. The prototypes were made between 3200 B.C - 2200 B.C.

Historical Info's
-------------------------
The Spedos type is the most common of Cycladic figures. Typically, it is a slender elongated female selling with folded arms. It is characterized by a U-shaped head. Also, it has a deeply incised cleft between the legs.

The "Spedos variety", named after an Early Cycladic cemetery on Naxos, is the most prolific category of "canonical" figurines. It has the widest distribution within the Cyclades as well as elsewhere, and the greatest longevity. The group as a whole includes figurines ranging in height from miniature examples of 8 cm. to monumental sculptures of 1.50 m. With the exception of a statue of a male figure, now in the Museum of Cycladic Art Collection, all known works of the Spedos variety are female figures.
