Just one of the most interesting watercolour landscape paintings I have come across for quite some time.
A. H. Baker captures the fenland in a very surreal manner which beautifully adds such atmosphere, full of drama in the thickening sky with two menacing looking, compositionally well placed large bushes or trees in the distance. To maximise effect, the artist has seemingly used only very few colours in a limited colour palette. Very much the domain of the professional artist. It always puzzles me when me when Sunday painters will have a palette of every conceivable colour and try to use most when a brief education in colour theory and mixing will elevate their work to greater appreciation with only a little effort.
The painting is in excellent condition on a period Whatman Drawing Board faced with Whatman hand-made paper of a course texture and in it's selling original, peat-coloured mount.
