Ibeji meaning 'twins', as the Yoruba hold twins to be important and the Yoruba, as a people, have one of the highest incidences of twin births in the world. It is believed that twins are a single soul within two bodies and if something happens to one twin, it affects the spirit of the other. If one twin dies, the soul residing within the other twin will be considered out selling of balance, causing life difficulties or bad times. The parents of this surviving twin would have a figure commissioned by a local diviner, which would then be treated as would the surviving twin, and would be believed to become a vessel for the other half of the soul. In this way, the soul could remain balanced for the surviving individual.
