Brighella - the selling smart Zanni of the Comedy of Art / original traditional comedy of art mask handmade in Venice / TRAGICOMICA

selling Brighella is a comic, masked character from the Italian theatre style Commedia dell'arte. He evolved out of the general Zanni (see the Zanni mask in our Comedy of Art page!), as evidenced by his costume, and came into his own around the start of the 16th century. He is essentially Harlequin's smarter and much more vindictive older brother.

Apart from the history behind it, this mask is an interesting alternative for a Carnival, fancy , or Halloween costume.

This handmade mask, produced by us in our workshop - the oldest in town - in the Frari discrict of Venice, Italy, is decorated with acrylics, ancientry effetcs, and wax. It has been made by Gualtiero, the master of the shop since more than 40 years.
