Product code: Vintage Art Pottery Goose Finial selling Covered Sugar Bowl George Rector Caledonia Pottery 1999 Cullowhee North Carolina Folk Modern

Folk art takes a whimsical turn with this covered sugar bowl topped with a goose finial in shades of coral and rust by George Rector of Caledonia Pottery. This orange-pink sugar bowl has brushwork bands and leaves in white, black and brown. It is glazed both inside and out.

A master potter, George has cited the stoneware of China, Korea, Japan and northern Europe as influences. This piece embodies a northern European flare. This lidded sugar bowl or covered jar could add fun to your table or tea tray. Of course, there are no rules that this container must be used for sugar, the size of this lidded jar would work well for holding jewelry, spools of thread for applique or English paper piecing, or other small items. It would blend with many room styles: folk, cottage, farmhouse, eclectic and modern.

George Rector is well known for his treadle style, kick wheel, hand thrown pottery. He adapted his wood fired kiln at Caledonia Pottery in Cullowhee, North Carolina, for soda firing in 1996. This bowl, stamped on its side with his mark a G R within a square, dates to 1999 based on an autographed pottery book. George also taught at Western Carolina University for many years until his retirement. His work is included in the Fine Art Museum at Cullowhee, and he remains a long-standing member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild.

The goose sugar bowl is approximately 4.5 inches tall with finial and 3 1/2 inches wide at its widest and 2 3/4 inches wide at its base. selling The rim is just under 3 inches across. The base by itself is about 3 inches tall and the lid by itself is just under 2 inches tall to the top of the finial. The lidded sugar weighs 10.6 ounces. It has a wonderful handmade character including variations in the clay, the brushwork, and the glazing.

The lidded sugar bowl is in an excellent vintage condition without chips, cracks or repairs. The glazing also appears to be in very good condition. The bowl was displayed in an enclosed cabinet. Its base retains some adhesive felt cushions so that it remains ready to be used or displayed without scratching any surface. Please examine the photos in making your decision. This offering includes the goose bowl only, other art pottery and props are not included in this sale.
