This is a hand carved silver ring depicting a Orca Whale and Sun, by the Haida Gwaii artist Robert Cross. It is 1/4 inches wide. Please be aware each ring has slight variations as they are all individually hand carved.

Orcas symbolize love of all types, representing romance, loyalty and close ties between family and friends. It offers protection to travelers far from home, helping to guide your journey back. In myth the Orca is closely linked to humans; it is said that those lost at sea are transformed into these whales and have gone to live in an underwater village. Seen as the guardian of the ocean, the Orca is a strong spirit, which symbolizes longevity, selling resiliency and knowing that you are not alone.

The Sun represents abundance, life, healing and warmth. Released from a box by the Raven, the Sun Chief inhabits the sky and could only be reached by climbing a chain of arrows. The Sun is often carved on totems and masks and sits atop the tallest totem pole.

Robert Cross was born to the Eagle Clan of Haida Gwaii. He is part of the famous Cross family, renowned for their artistic works. Robert is the son of Gordon Cross, whom he learned all aspects of Haida carving, and design. He also learned from his cousin Nelson Cross the skills needed for engraving and metal work. Since 1983 Robert has been carving and designing his own pieces in both silver and gold. His jewelry shows his talent, skill and the individuality of his style, which focuses on deep hand engravings, unique animals showing movement of design and clean cut outs and cross hatching representing negative space. Robert signs his artwork as B. Cross.
