I had one last day left in Chicago. and I decided to focus on skyline shots. I thought I would try to photograph the skyline from the Adler Planetarium in the day and from North Avenue Beach in the evening. Arriving at the Adler in the morning I realized that the light wasn't very good and skyline view was very hazy. Not great for photographs. I hung out in the area all day, periodically taking photos but they weren't looking good. Having the correct light is everything! I eventually realized I needed to head off to North Avenue Beach if I hoped to get the night photo I wanted there. I figured I would need to capture the skyline from the Adler on my next trip.

However when I arrived at North Avenue Beach the parking lot was closed and the parking lot at the next exit was reserved for the restaurant. I kept driving north trying to figure out what to do and decided I would try to salvage the day by going back to the Adler and capture the night skyline from there. However when I arrived back I was in for a surprise. In the roughly half hour since I had been there the area had gotten crowded. The parking lot I had parked in all day was now closed. All the available parking on the street was taken and spaces clearly marked no parking were also filling up!. I realized that these spaces were reserved for tour busses during the day and since they were no longer operating at this late hour, maybe it would be okay to park there. All the folks already parked there must know something I didn't, right? I joined them, grabbed my gear, and set up for my shot.

Time seemed to move slowly as I waited for the sun to go down and the lights of the city to twinkle. I could hear fragments of conversation as people drifted by. One couple strolling by saw my camera and asked me to take their picture. Occasionally I would smell something or other that folks nearby were eating. I watched as the building lights slowly turned on as the skyline began to twinkle. I could see the sky getting noticeable darker and in a matter of minutes the moment would be right to capture.

Suddenly I heard the blare of a siren off to my left. Wheeling around I saw one of Chicago's finest getting out of her car and headed for the end car that was parked in the no parking zone. I knew it was only a matter of time before I too received a ticket unless I moved my car before she got there. But the light would be right in just a few minutes. Did I have enough time to take my photo first? Would I end up spending the day without getting a single good photograph?

I decided I didn't have enough time to get my shot before I had to move my car. And I couldn't just leave my camera for anyone to grab. Reluctantly I took down my tripod, packed all my gear, slung my backpack on my shoulder, and started for my car. I pulled out in selling search of a new place to park.

After driving around for a few minutes I found a lone parking spot, but this one was much farther away than my last one and I had to figure out how to pay. After that was accomplished, I again grabbed my gear and raced off to my previous vantage point. I set up in record time and captured the series of photos that would be merged into the panorama photograph that you see here. When I finished, I realized that there was still blue in the sky, a necessary requirement for pleasing night photographs. I only partially collapsed my gear and raced back to North Avenue Beach to try again and managed one haphazard shot.
