Vintage "Profiles in Courage" selling John F Kennedy First Edition CG March 1957 Hardcover with Dust Jacket
Vintage Profiles in Courage: Decisive Moments in the Lives of Celebrated Americans, by John F Kennedy First Edition Hardcover with Dust Jacket
First edition, early printing of Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Octavo, original half cloth, with eight pages of black-and-white photographs; pages are deckle edged.
A Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Kennedy wrote this when he was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage that progress requires. Now, more than a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality." Forward by Allan Nevins.
Note: Early printings of this book lack the FIRST EDITION statement, and have different printing codes indicating the month and year when they were printed. The first letter indicates the month and the second letter indicates the year. The months range from A to M where A is January, B is February, C is March, and so forth through to M, which indicates December. J is skipped for some reason. The years are represented by the second letter which can be A through Z, and once again the letter J is skipped. Thus the letters represent a 25 year span, after which the letters repeat. The first printing has the publisher's code M-E on the copyright page, meaning December 1955. This copy has the publisher's code CG, meaning March 1957. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Slight foxing on endpapers, light toning in gutters. Price-clipped flap. The illustrated dust jacket has a crease down the front left side and is chipped on the edges with some foxing having developed. There are no missing pages, no inscriptions, notes, spots, stains, or tears on any of the selling pages. The pages are toning with age and the cover boards have shelf wear and bumping.
